Term 2 Week 12

Hello Parents,

We went on a field trip to Kurukuru Recycling Center. We gained a deeper understanding of the three R's- reduce, reuse and recycle.

We did a tour of the facility and participated in recycling activities.

We learned new vocabulary, read labels, and connect environmental concepts to our everyday experiences. We visited their paper making studio and made postcards using paper packs.

We went to Expo for lunch.

We were challenged to produce zero food waste at their mealtime while learning about the amount of food waste produced every year that could productively go to a compost pile.

Have a good weekend,
Ms. Trichelle

Term 2 Week 11

Hello Parents,

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend Parents' Morning. We were very happy that you could join us for a morning of activities and fun. We hope that you had a great time and had the opportunity to celebrate your child's success.

Parents' Morning
Merit winners for the month of October

In English,  we focused on penmanship and poetry. We read poems from several poets and identified the rhyming words in each of them. We were able to produce and recognize words with visual and partner support. We looked at the features of poetry and worked on creating a poem on our own.

Students identified the rhyming words in a poem.

In Math, we continued to work on our division skills. This week we used a discovery approach to explore the meaning of division and brainstormed basic terms such as dividend, divisor and quotient. We explored the relationship between multiplication and division. We then  solve division problems and learned why 0 cannot be a divisor.

In Unit of Inquiry, we continued to inquire into ways in which we can save resources and protect our planet. We learned about environmental consequences of not recycling and conducted a research on Greta Thunberg to learn more about global warming. As a class, we discussed the actions we can take to stop global warming and we came up with several actions we can take to protect the earth. Later on in the week, we worked together to make useful crafts from waste materials in the classroom. We also created a pictograph  to see how many items we recycled in a week. We were not impressed with the result on the pictograph so we all made a promise to try our best to minimize the amount of materials we use next week.

This week we add more to the list of actions we can take to stop global warming.

Lily, Kai and Ece reused a pet bottle to make a flower pot for the class garden.

Taichi, Runa and Franklin reused sponge and cardboard to make an eraser for the board.

Rion and Alisa reused paper towel roll to make a telescope.

We made a pictograph to see how many items we recycled in a week.
We watched a video of a recycling plant to further educate ourselves on the practice of reducing, reusing and recycling  materials and why these are important practices in our daily lives.

Have a good weekend,
Ms.Trichelle

Term 2 Week 9

Hello Parents,

In Math, we learned about data handling. We learned  how to solve problems by collecting data and organizing it in a way which was easy to read and understand. We had a great time conducting surveys among our peers and using different types of graphs to represent the information. We also applied our knowledge of graphs to ask and answer interpretive questions about data.

In Unit of Inquiry, we inquired about the world's major biomes. We organized information from visuals about these biomes and examined  their key features and climate zones. We were able to observe and describe how different biomes supported different varieties of organisms. In addition, we had a great time working with our peers to design a travel brochure featuring some of the major biomes of the world.

In English, we continued to make connections between personal experiences and storybook characters. We also focused on writing conventions with main emphasis on understanding sentence order.  Later on in the week, we worked cooperatively in groups to explore several sentences, create  our own sentences and rearrange their order to make them make sense.

PSPE
Lily and Franklin worked together to create their own sentences.

Students collected survey responses from their classmates then graph their survey results.

Kai and Aaradhya  worked on filling out information about a desert biome.
Rion and Ece  conducted a research on aquatic biome.

Lily and Taichi were actively engaged in a discussion about the characteristics of a tundra.

Franklin and Runa  wrote about the characteristics of the forest biomes and showed the dominant plants and animals on their travel brochure.

Students artwork showing some of the major biomes of the world.

We identified the biomes and climates of different areas of the world.

Have a good week,
Ms.Trichelle
