Term1 Week 6

Dear Parents,

Happy Literacy Week! We had a productive week filled with a lot of literacy activities. We were happy to participate in the spelling contest, listen to the parents' stories, visit the local library, and much more!

In Library class this week, we did a role play where we pretended to be library detectives and went on a book hunt to complete some challenges around the library. This activity helped us to know how a library works, where to find fantastic books, and the wide variety of resources inside it. We also made our own bookmarkers to celebrate Literacy Week.

Challenge number 1-Can you find a book about a country? Lily found a book about America.

In English class, we continued to develop our writing skills by engaging in creative writing. We used our imaginations and creativity to make up a story. We then made a poster to illustrate our story ideas.

In Math class, we continued to do some mental strategies and worked with our peers to solve the problems, We also read and interpreted scaled pictographs. We had a great time making our own pictographs then interviewing our peers to find out some information about them.

Alisa and Runa  using their pictographs to determine how many children in the class chose bananas as their favorite fruit.

In Unit of Inquiry, we worked on our community models. We were  very happy to display our communities and used all the information we learned over the course to do our presentations. We asked questions, made comments and gave our peers constructive criticisms on their presentations.

Have a good weekend,
Ms. Trichelle

Term 1 Week 5

Dear Parents,

In Library class, we went  on a scavenger hunt to search for authors with the same initials as ours.We were able to track down quite a few of them. We were very impressed with their books and happy to see our initials on book covers.

In English class, we practiced identifying story elements for summarizing stories. We had a great time reading books to find these elements (characters, setting, events, problem, solution) to put on our retelling gloves. These gloves helped us to retell stories in our own words. In addition, we continued to develop our writing and descriptive skills using adjectives to describe characters from stories and short videos. We wrote some sentences about the characters and shared them with our peers.

In Math class, we continued to follow and give instructions involving position, direction and movement. We explored the school ground to find right angles. We were able to find right angles on the window frames, drain covers, paving slabs and many other places. We  also continued to work on  our addition and subtraction  skills. We  wrote our own two-digit numbers on cards and exchanged them with our peers. We were happy to see our peers trying to solve the problems we created.

In Unit of Inquiry, we finished inquiry into our beliefs and values and the impact they have on ourselves and communities. We interviewed our peers to find out their overall views on the unit and how to build a strong community. We analyzed the concept of belonging and did a research to find out ways in which we can help each other feel a sense of belonging in their communities. To better understand some of the feelings associated with belonging and not feeling a sense of belonging, we made a Venn diagram to sort the various emotions.  Later on in the week, we explored these emotions, and  assigned a color for each one of them. We did some painting to express our emotions and later discussed ways in which our emotions can affect other people in the community.

Term1 Week 4

Hello Parents,

A warm welcome back after Golden Week! I hope that you all had a wonderful time and are now relaxed, recharged and ready to continue on this journey with us in Grade 1.

In our English class this week, we continued to demonstrate our understanding of explicit meaning in texts. We used the various reading strategies to help with comprehension and decode unfamiliar words. In addition, we used chain story activities to focus on particular language points and vocabulary.

In Math class, we continued to use addition and subtraction strategies by using natural things in our environment to enhance our fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills.  Later on in the week, we were introduced to geometry with  the main focus on position and movement. We had a great time working with our peers to find out practical applications for various destinations using the mathematical concepts.

In Unit of Inquiry, we continued to inquiry about our values and beliefs  and the actions that came as a consequence of those values. We carried out a research on our own culture and then  worked with our peers to learn about their culture. We had a great time creating a culture world web to identify the differences and similarities in cultures that exist in our learning environment.

Have a great weekend,
Ms.Trichelle
