Term 1 Week 10

Dear Parents,

This week we celebrated  Numeracy Week. We had a great week filled with problem solving, games and exploring numbers. We did several activities throughout the week and had a great time working with our peers on a number of projects.

We took photos of Mathematics in real-life situations. We voted on our favorite photo, but it was very difficult to choose one since we all had some brilliant ideas.

Throughout the week,  we worked on our math poster. We explored the environment and tried to find things around us to put on it.
We painted some stones to put on our math poster. We used the stones as counters.

Lily made a wooden triangle  to put on  the poster.
We wrote math problems on leaves and challenged our peers to solve them as we pasted them on the math tree

We went shopping with the money we earned throughout the week. We had a great shopping experience!

Math Spirit Day-We wore something related to Math/Numeracy.
.

Have a great weekend,

Ms. Trichelle

Term 1 Week 9

Hello Parents,

Thank you to all the parents who came to Parents' Morning. We had a great time exploring with you the properties of materials in the learning environment. We were happy to have you in our class.

In English class, we read and reviewed grade leveled  books. In addition, we continued to work on our writing skills. We also spent the rest of the week identifying direct and indirect meaning in a text.  We enjoyed finding unfamiliar words and using context clues to determine the meaning of the words.

In Math class, we started to inquire into ways to measure length.  We practiced how to read and use a ruler. This lesson provided us with the opportunity to apply our understanding of centimeters in a range of hands-on learning activities. In addition, we continued to work on estimation, comparing and ordering as important skills of measurement.

In Unit of Inquiry, we brainstormed ideas about what is technology and science.  We inquired into ways in which science and technology changed over the years. We had a great time working with our peers and researching, investigating and presenting on various topics.

Have a good weekend,
Ms.Trichelle

Term 1 Week 8

Dear Parents,

In Library class, we did word search on some of the words we often used on a daily basis. The object of the activity was to find the listed hidden words and know how to spell them. We had a great time working with our peers as we tried to find as many words as possible.

This week we went on our first field trip to Osaka Science Museum. The museum provided a rich learning experience, support content standards and created excitement for learning science through their hands-on exhibits and activities. We enjoyed the experience very much.

In English class, we continued to work on direct and indirect meaning in a text. We also used the think-pair-share strategy in comprehending our reading materials. At the same time, we continued to work on our writing skills by rewriting sentences and inserting the correct punctuation marks.

In Math class, we continued to inquire into ways to measure mass. We practiced reading scales by using some of our classroom items.

In Unit of Inquiry, we continued to inquire into the ways in which science and technology changed over the years. We worked in small groups to conduct an investigation and research on various topics related to the question then we did a presentation to show our understanding of the question.

Have a good weekend,
Ms.Trichelle

Term 1 Week 7

Dear Parents,

In English class, we looked at sentence structures. We continued  to work on our writing skills as we practiced arranging sentences in order. We also continued to practice reading by arranging  story sequence sheets for increasing and assessing the familiarity with the main events in stories.

In Math class, we have been inquiring into ways to measure mass. We had a great time reading, comparing  and recording the weight of items in our classroom. We were introduced to a new term  'hefting' and we took turns to  carry out the process.

Kai and Sakura comparing mass by hefting. Hefting is  the process by which
we use our hands to measure two items to determine the heavier/ lighter object.

We were then introduced to a pan balance which is a type of scale to compare and measure mass. We  worked in small groups to put the scale together and came up with some ideas of how to use it. We interacted with the scales for a while then we collected items around the classroom to put in it to see how they worked. We soon realized that this was a more accurate way to measure mass than  using hefting. Some of us were able to find items that measured the same, while for others it was a little more challenging to get the pan balances to measure the same weight. We look forward to investigating more about mass and using an actual scale to carry out the measurement next time.

In  Unit of Inquiry, we started on our next unit.We brainstormed the concept of technology and make predictions. We also looked at technology in the classroom and used our imaginations and creativity to discuss life without technology  and ways and means we can survive without it.

Have a good weekend,
Ms. Trichelle

We discussed the importance of technology in the classroom.

We drew some examples of technology in the classroom.
