Term 1 - Who we are

 Dear Grade 1 Parents,

I hope everyone is having a great week. After taking over the class we have been working on our class agreements. Every morning we go through them and add one every other day if something happened in the classroom. Our biggest focus has been working together as a team and also paying close attention to other students’ feelings by communicating using a common language. They even met my good friend Peter and promised him that they will try their best!

In our English class, we continue to demonstrate our understanding of explicit meaning in texts, review books, and learn how to write correctly using proper grammar and punctuation. We used the various reading strategies to help with comprehension and decode unfamiliar words. In addition, we have been working on sounding out words and trying to spell them. In order to become better writers we want them to write a draft first and then fix it. They also worked very hard on their presentation skills.

In Math class, we continued to use addition and subtraction strategies by using natural things in our environment to enhance our fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills.  At the same time we have been having fun counting up to the hundreds and writing them down on a string of paper as well as using our rulers to measure various things and collect data. We had a great time working with our peers to find out practical applications for various destinations using the mathematical concepts.

In Unit of Inquiry, we work very hard to inquiry about our values and beliefs and the actions that came as a consequence of those values. We chose the values that resonated the most with us and wrote examples that represent them. We had a great time creating our own poster where we identified the values that are important for us and the differences and similarities that exist in our classroom. We also practiced our presentation skills by going in front of the classroom and share our thoughts.

It has been such a pleasure teaching grade 1. We are more than excited to see how much they will grow from now on.

Please do not hesitate to asl should have any questions or concerns.

Thank you so much!

Mr. Hector
