Term 2 Week 2 -Literacy Week

 Hello Parents,

This week we celebrated Literacy Week.  The  purpose of the week was to promote the importance of literacy across the curriculum so that students understand that basic literacy skills are important  in all lessons and not just in English. The students participated in a number of reading based activities. These were the highlights of the week:

Throughout the week, we were encouraged to answer some questions about books and literature. We took on the challenge with great excitement as we visited each floor for the book trivia displays.

We invited parents to come to the classroom and read a book to us in any language. We were very happy to host an effective and engaging family reading experience.

As a class, we worked together to write a poem. We also created some characters for a story challenge.

As part of our school's literacy week, we visited the book fair corner in the library. We all bought at least one book during the book fair. We enjoyed the book fair and were excited to look at all the books

We identified characters from different types of books in a fun and interactive game.

We were very happy to visit the Grade 6 classroom to participate in their literacy activity.

Reading Reunion-We were very excited to reunite with our former homeroom teacher . She came to our classroom to read a story to us.

On the final day of Literacy Week, we all came to school dressed as our favorite book characters.

Term 2 Week 1

 Hello Parents,

Welcome back to the start of Term 2. The students have settled back into their class routines and we are looking forward to another productive term. There are many interesting events and activities that will occur during the term so we ask for your continued support and cooperation.

UOI

This week we were introduced to a new theme. We looked at a collection of questions to guide our inquiry on the new topic. We had a great time working with our peers to discuss the questions and present our thoughts to the class. We also recognized and named different types of homes in our local environment using observation, pictures and other research materials. At the latter part of the week, we identified, described and drew details and key features of our own homes.

English

Throughout the week, we engaged in various reading activities to improve our reading comprehension skills. We also did some exercises to review the basics of English grammar and vocabulary. In the latter part of the week, we identified and explained the basic structure of a story. In light of our Unit of Inquiry theme, we read stories about the different types of homes and houses. We compared features of each home using a special house and home writing paper. We also practiced sounding out and spelling new words using a word map.

Math

We learned about time. We learned how to write and order the months of the year and days of the week using houses and homes word cards. We also learned how to read and write the time to the hour, half hour and quarter hour.
