Where We Are In Time And Place

Hello Hello!

This unit we had a lot of fun researching about our identities and where do our likes and dislikes come from. We also looked at many different types of homes around the world and what is necessary in order to build a house. 

Central Idea: Homes reflect personal identity, culture, and environment.

Lines of inquiry :

• Function - How homes serve us
• Change - How homes change based on personal identity and culture.
• Causation - The materials and structures of homes in different environments.

First we started by looking at our homes and wondered about them. They came up with questions such as 

1. Why don't I have an own room?
2. Why is the kitchen and the living room together?
3. Why are toilets and baths together in some countries?
4. Why people abroad don't take off their shoes?

After reviewing different countries and reading several books together we all came up with the idea of trying to embody other cultures. We made several teams and started working on what we would like to represent from that specific country. Grade 1 chose to work on costumes and for such we need to work on clothes. All students became little fashion designers working on design, color, and how to represent that country the best they could.

Math

We had so much fun this unit with math. Not only did we work on double digit subtraction and addition but at the same time we worked on symmetry. Please look at their work of art trying to draw the other half of their faces. It is incredible how good they are!

English

For English we worked very hard on parts of speech, mainly focusing on nouns, verbs, and adjectives. For this we played several games and also did a small play so our friends can guess what words we chose. 

We also learned how to convey a message by writing newspapers. In this newspaper we tried to write everything that we learned about the topic. We wrote about being global, our identity, community, personal interests etc. 

At the same time we are learning how our writing can have a big impact on others by write comments on someone else's work. It is hard to do it in the beginning but when you see your paper with lots of comments from others we start feeling happy about our work. 

This unit we made a summary of the words and topics we learned. We learned about: 

1. Empathy,
2. Different types of homes and houses
3. Identity and Personal
4. Reflective
5. Good Manners
6. Culture
7. Patience
8. Responsibility

It will be a very good idea to use these topics at home and learn with them or even ask them questions about it!
