Hi! This week in grade 1...

Math- We practiced halves and quarters by putting them into unit of inquiry terms. For example, If there are 16 fish in the ocean and one quarter of them are blue how many is that?

English- We wrote a letter to planet earth describing all the things which we will do to protect it. The kids are doing really well with spelling tests so I will be giving them optional harder words if they want to try.

The spelling words this week are:

1.home  2.nose  3.joke  4.own  5.also 6.boat 7.goal 8.foam 9.snow 10.bowl
Review words: Free, baby, treat
Star Words: goes, float

Unit of Inquiry- We finished up our bags and took them home. We also picked animals and made animal biome drawings where the students drew their chosen animals biome inside of an outline of it. We also collected sticks and learned how we can use found object to make art. We made nature eyes using the sticks. We also performed a science experiment for the infants class on Thursday. We got a chance to look around the science fair today and see what the other classes have done for science week. We submitted our decomposition experiment for everyone to look at. All the natural object were a gooey decomposing mess where as the plastic is in perfect condition.

Talent Show- There will be a talent show at the end of this semester. The kids have 4 minutes to do a song/dance/magic/etc. They can do it alone or in groups and it is not mandatory. If the kids would like to participate they need to write their names on the signup list with their names and how long their performance will be.

Reading buddies- This week we had reading buddies with the kinder class to show perspective students what it would be like to be a primary student. The students modeled good behaviour and excellent reading and listening skills.

Games in the park- As well as reading buddies we taught the kinder kids a game called "bear, salmon, mosquito" in the park. It is a game similar to octopus/tag about the foodchain.

This week in grade 1!

Field trip We had a super fun week in grade one. The field trip on Tuesday was really fun. The kids did an amazing job cleaning up the beach and learning about nature. Later in the afternoon we had a very informative tour around the incineration plant where we learned how much garbage Osaka produces in a day and saw it first hand. I think it was good for the kids to have first hand experience seeing what we are actually studying!.

Reusable bags- The kids painted their reusable bags that they made out of old t-shirts!

Recycling bins/scripts and videos The students wrote scripts and created a video to explain how to use recycling buns and why they are important!

Coming up next week: Science Week
