Term 1 Week 7

Dear Parents,

In English class, we looked at sentence structures. We continued  to work on our writing skills as we practiced arranging sentences in order. We also continued to practice reading by arranging  story sequence sheets for increasing and assessing the familiarity with the main events in stories.

In Math class, we have been inquiring into ways to measure mass. We had a great time reading, comparing  and recording the weight of items in our classroom. We were introduced to a new term  'hefting' and we took turns to  carry out the process.

Kai and Sakura comparing mass by hefting. Hefting is  the process by which
we use our hands to measure two items to determine the heavier/ lighter object.

We were then introduced to a pan balance which is a type of scale to compare and measure mass. We  worked in small groups to put the scale together and came up with some ideas of how to use it. We interacted with the scales for a while then we collected items around the classroom to put in it to see how they worked. We soon realized that this was a more accurate way to measure mass than  using hefting. Some of us were able to find items that measured the same, while for others it was a little more challenging to get the pan balances to measure the same weight. We look forward to investigating more about mass and using an actual scale to carry out the measurement next time.

In  Unit of Inquiry, we started on our next unit.We brainstormed the concept of technology and make predictions. We also looked at technology in the classroom and used our imaginations and creativity to discuss life without technology  and ways and means we can survive without it.

Have a good weekend,
Ms. Trichelle
