Dear Grade 1 Parents,
This unit had such a great time. It took little to no time for them to understand that they are in Grade 1.
We had some hard time managing our energy levels throughout the day but by being able to regulate our
energy levels we were able to slowly get used to the new class routines.
First, we needed to create our essential agreement which is super important in order to
keep a harmonious classroom.
We also talk about our daily goals that we set up during our morning meeting.
Mostly referred to the IB profiles and attitudes.
UOI
For UOI we did a lot of digging about what makes us special.
As you were able to see on Toddle videos, Grade 1 tried so hard to develop skills
such as being able to listen to others with care as well as how to wait patiently or
take turns when they wanted to speak with someone who was busy.
Math
We rediscover how we can count in a fun and active way.
We don't have to sit down and count with our fingers if we want to find out the answer to a problem.
As you can see in the following video students worked together for a common goal.
The problem was to find groups of similar items.
It took us a while to understand but we had lots of fun trying to do it as a team.
P.E
In P.E we learned about fundamental body movements such as kicking, jumping, running,
throwing etc. Mr. Soydan did a great job explaining the rules to Grade 1
as well as preparing for our first Sports day as Grade 1 students!
It was definitely a great experience for us.
English
In English the most difficult part was moving away from the fear of writing.
Thus, we worked really hard to become thinkers and risk-takers by writing using our
decoding and segmenting skills. Little by little we have become more able to move away from it
and write long sentences.
In English we have different parts such as: free writing class, spelling class,
grammar focus class, and book review class. Each day we focus on something
different so they can also explore at their own pace. In the future we will decide as a
class when we want to have each class throughout the week.
Celebration of Learning
It has been such a long time since parents were able to come to the
classroom and enjoy a class together. I hope you were able to see how much they have grown.
They worked hard to understand what values are and how we can show them better.
They also tried doing a presentation for the very first time.
They were nervous but did a fantastic job becoming risk taker and overcome
their shyness by presenting their findings with you.
Grade 1 worked so hard during our Who We Are theme and will try even harder to become
more outspoken and confident in English.
I hope you were able to enjoy this first term and look forward for another wonderful time during
term 2.
